How to Win Family Approval for Your Marriage

8 min read Syeda Zainab Bibi Related service: Parent Approval

Parents almost never refuse a marriage because they want their child unhappy. They refuse because they are afraid of something specific — being talked about, being disrespected, a daughter treated badly, a family they cannot judge, or a decision made without them. Win approval by answering the fear, not by winning the argument.

Find the real objection

The stated reason is often not the reason. “They are not from our biradari” can mean “I will have to explain this to my brothers.” “He does not earn enough” can mean “I am afraid you will struggle the way I did.” Ask calmly, more than once, and listen without correcting. You cannot answer a fear you have not heard.

Typically it is one of five: reputation among relatives, financial security, character and family background, religious or sectarian difference, or the simple fact that they were told rather than consulted. The last one is the most common and the easiest to repair.

The sequence that works

  1. Stop arguing entirely. Every argument makes their position public, and a public position is harder to reverse.
  2. Improve your standing at home. Reliability, respect, presence at family events. Parents say yes to people they are currently proud of.
  3. Choose an intermediary. An uncle, aunt, elder sibling, or family friend your parents respect — someone whose opinion carries weight and who is not you.
  4. Let the subject arrive indirectly. Through that person, in a normal conversation, framed as a suitable match rather than a fight already underway.
  5. Invite a formal proposal. When the ground has softened, the other family should approach in the usual way. Normal process reassures parents more than any promise.

This takes months, not days. Almost every failed case in our experience failed on speed.

Do not use threats. Not elopement, not self-harm, not cutting off contact. Whatever they concede under threat is withdrawn later, and the resentment lasts into the marriage — usually landing on your spouse.

What to do about relatives

The objection is often not your parents’ at all — it is an aunt, an uncle, or a cousin whose commentary they cannot ignore. Address that person separately and respectfully, or ensure a stronger voice in the family speaks first. Never confront them; you will simply give them a story to circulate.

The Islamic side

Parents have a right to be honoured, and Islam holds that right high even when they are wrong. But honouring parents does not oblige you to marry someone you cannot live with, nor does it give anyone the right to force a nikah. Both extremes — disobedience for love, and coercion for family pride — are outside the balance the Shariah sets.

Practically: keep serving them, keep your speech soft, and keep asking Allah rather than campaigning. Duas that fit this stage are simple — dua for hearts to be softened, salatul hajat, quiet sadaqah, and istikhara to be sure you are asking for something good in the first place. Note the order: istikhara before persuasion, not after failure.

When there is more than stubbornness

Some cases have a pattern that ordinary family politics does not explain. Parents agree, then reverse within a day. Every meeting is arranged and something intervenes. A relative’s single remark undoes months of progress, repeatedly. Proposals arrive and collapse at the last step, over and over.

Where that pattern is present, istikhara is used to see whether the obstruction is social, financial, timing, or rohani — nazar and hasad from within a family are more common than people expect around marriage. If something is found, permissible Quranic wazifa is given for it. If nothing is found, you will be told that plainly. That is the work described on our parent approval page.

If the answer stays no

Give it real time before concluding anything — most refusals soften over a year, especially once an elder is involved. If it does not, you face a decision with consequences either way, and you should make it with clear eyes rather than in a moment of anger. Speak to someone honest, pray for guidance, and remember that a marriage begun in permanent family rupture starts with a weight that never fully lifts.

Summary

  • Answer the fear, not the argument.
  • Use a respected intermediary; never make it a contest.
  • Istikhara first, patience throughout, threats never.
